Dunkin' Donuts Big Dunk

Do you know that your favorite donut treat comes from a long history of yummy delicacies from all over the world? Called “globi” or “globuli” by ancient Romans, they used little round balls of dough to which cheese was added before cooking in oil, then dipped in honey and sprinkled with poppy seeds.

Europeans have always loved their donut delicacies. Austria in the 18th century had their own donut version called “krapfens”, which are bent like the letter “S”, and filled with various kinds of fruit filling. The French have their “beignet” filled with rose hips paste, while the Italians called theirs “Bomboloni”. The German “Berliner” has plum or strawberry jam as its traditional filling topped with sugar syrup.

Poland’s “paczek” is a special treat from Christmas morning to Epiphany with traditional filled with cherry and rose petals. The Russian “pishka”, on the other hand, is a round ball roasted in olive or sunflower oil.

All over the African continent, donut-like snacks were known by different names like “lagaymat”, “koeksuster”, “yetkoek” and “yo-yos”. Chinese “youtiao” is a golden-brown deep-fried strip of dough usually served for breakfast with rice congee and soy milk.

Donuts were believed to arrive in America in the 19th century through the Dutch settlers, which called the treat “olykoek”. Hansen Gregory, an American, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847 aboard a lime-trading ship when he was only sixteen years old.

Since then, donuts, as we know now, became a worldwide phenomenon.
