In celebration of Nutrition month this July, SM City Baliwag recently conducted “Lutong Bahay ni Nanay” a cooking competition highlighting some of the unique and healthy dishes prepared by Senior Citizens in Baliwag.
In line with this year’s Nutrition month theme “Kumain ng wasto at maging aktibo…Push natin to!” that aims to promote healthy diet and physical activity among individuals and families, SM City Baliwag, held a cooking competition for seniors’ to introduce and further recognize some healthy option to preparing food. At least 140 senior citizens from the 27 Barangays in Baliwag attended the event.
Barangay Makinabang lead by Remedios Leonardo emerged as the Champion with the winning recipe Crispy Banana Blossom with Malunggay Leaves and their unique beverage called Camote Tops Juice. Aside from its unique components, Barangay Makinabang’s recipe was cited for its nutritional ingredients such as Malunggay commonly known as an antioxidant that helps combat malnutrition, lowers blood sugar level and cholesterol. On the other hand, Banana Blossoms is a rich source of vitamins and minerals and manages diabetes and anemia. While Camote Tops do wonders in heart, eye and bone health, and has antibacterial components.
Hailed as tie on the second spot were Barangay Tibag lead by Norma Ignacio with their version of Pork Binagoongan fused with gata or coconut milk, and Barangay Tangos lead by Carmen Gonzales with their Beef Kare Kare made with rice flour.
Gracing the event were Senior Citizen officials lead by FSCAP Baliwag Chapter President Narciso Sta. Juana, OSCA Head Eligio Francisco Jr and SM City Baliwag Mall Officers.
“Lutong Bahay ni Nanay” Senior’s Day at the Mall is a program under SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation for Elderly Care— the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Group of Companies, that aims to honor and nurture senior citizens in every community where SM serves.
